Understanding Scabies: What It Is and How It Spreads

Scabies has been making headlines lately, and there's a growing concern about medication shortages, as highlighted by the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies (AIMP). Doctors are expressing worries about the increasing cases of this contagious skin condition, especially during the winter months.

So, what exactly is scabies, how do you catch it, and what should you know?

### What are the symptoms of scabies?

Dr. Ross Perry, a GP and medical director at Cosmedics Skin Clinics, describes scabies as "an incredibly uncomfortable itchy and bumpy rash." The rash is characterized by red, itchy bumps and spots that can appear anywhere on the body. Commonly affected areas include the hands, between the fingers, and around the waist, groin, and armpits.

If you suspect you have scabies, Dr. Perry advises seeing your GP as a first step.

### What causes scabies and how do you get it?

Unlike other conditions with itchy rashes, scabies is both contagious and caused by mites. The symptoms are a result of the saliva, eggs, and feces of the parasite mite sarcoptes. It primarily spreads through direct and prolonged skin-to-skin contact with an affected person, but can also transmit via bedding, clothing, and towels.

Dr. Perry warns that the scabies rash may take up to eight weeks to appear, during which it can spread rapidly, especially on bedding and clothes.

### How do you treat scabies?

Immediate treatment is crucial, according to Dr. Perry. Typically, this involves applying a cream or lotion all over the body and repeating the process a week later. Special care is needed when treating toddlers, babies under two, pregnant women, or those breastfeeding.

It's recommended to treat all members of a household, even if they aren't showing symptoms. Additionally, inform anyone you've had sexual contact with in the last eight weeks so they can seek treatment.

Dr. Perry emphasizes other measures such as washing clothes, bedding, and towels on a hot wash, and vacuuming carpets and furniture. Personal hygiene is paramount, including frequent handwashing and avoiding sexual contact if scabies is suspected until the treatment is completed. Stay informed and take prompt action to manage scabies effectively.
